On The Scene: Mao Livehouse 21-03-2013

Edit_05

Low expectations – gotta love em. Grimes’ Visions was a flat-out great album – one that got a lot of playtime spring last year. Maybe a bit too much, as when the hype finally died down, and the backlash began to set in, I was almost convinced that the show, part of the one-two-three punch combo finale of SplitWorks’ JUEy festival, would be a complete utter let down. Add that to the fact that their were a lot of complaints out of Shanghai the night before about tickets being sold out, the set being way too short, and the Canadian electro-poptress coming on way too early, and well I was ready to throw in the towel and tell everyone ‘I told ya so’ (all of three which happened tonight as well). But I staggered along, late, a bit under the influence, and lord and behold somehow found myself smack in the middle of Mao Livehouse with a bunch of sweaty hipsters, with a Zoom attached to my head, having bubblegum neon electro pop raining down on me.

Yeah, I had a fucking blast. And the enthusiast, broing out that was taking place all around me – well hell, felt like university all over again. I didn’t even tell you about the bubbles yet. Bubbles for crying out loud. Why? Why the hell not, that’s why.

On The Scene: Yugong Yishan 20-03-2013

I knew full well that Yugong Yishan was going to be a clusterfuck of epic proportions as the esteemed Gang of Four (albeit with just Andy Gill on guitar), one of post punk pioneers, was to perform for the first time in Beijing. However, the more interesting matter was Andy Gill’s influence and fondness for the music scene here, particularly his involvement with AV Okubo’s latest album Dynasty, expected to come out sooner than later. So frankly, I was more curious to catch opening act – that was until word got out that Gang of Four was to debut a new song – a collaboration between AV Okubo frontman Lu Di, and Re-Tros singer Hua Dong (who also had toured with the band before) entitled “Broken Talk” – now going to the show was a must if only to catch this little gem -

an awesome representation of the cross-pollution that the music scene will likely be swimming in in the near future. Seriously, this is bad ass. Check out below to read up and check out videos from AV Okubo’s and Gang of Four’s sets, as well as Hua Dong rocking out to ‘Damaged Goods’. Fuck the entourage of cameras, steadicams, dollies, and heck, that one guy took up half the floor with his set up – this was too good to miss.

On The Scene: Yugong Yishan 17-03-2013

Yup I’m a ways behind – the price you pay for having your ridiculously awesome parents get down and dirty in Beijing – quite impressive for the retirees. Anywho, let’s play a little caught as March was the month that kept on giving.

As a part of JUE’s Emerging Young Artist Series on St. Paddy’s Day, Split Works brought together Plastered T-shirts, IdleBeats, and a host of up and coming bands courtesy of wooozy.cn, a pretty legit site offering the latest in media news here and aboard. The foursome lineup of recent signees to Maybe Mars, DICE, on-the-cusp of releasing their latest Residence A, the gracefully retro Mr. Graceless, and the dangerous minimalism of Snapline – it was too good an afternoon to pass up. Especially, when you got Yugong Yishan under the sun listening to such nuggets like this.

A fine afternoon indeed – let’s see what the bands offered up to the music gods.

News, Releases, Yada Yada Yada

Showing the rentals a good time whilst they’re here has been harder than initially thought – so it’s been a slow work week over here. Hell, this might be the first time I’ve touched my computer since Saturday. Nevertheless, have to pop in at some point, so why not recap some of the recent stories with new releases from Dear Eloise, Li Daiguo, Spice, and the latest from Bedstars, Round Eye and more.

Weekend Update

Think you can take it easy this weekend – nope. And though we have the Qingming Festival bringing all kinds of music goodness next week, the weekend ain’t slacking. I’m inclined to say take it easy this weekend, lay back, and relax with some smaller gigs. No? Well, fine, rage on little dudins.

FRIDAY

I’ve yet to get my fill of Dos Kolegas yet this year and it just feels wrong – tonight might have to be the night as the joint is bringing over Inner Mongolian hard rockers Nine Treasures along with recently signed (to Scream Records) Devils at the Crossroads, along with female-led The Incisors. Gulou joint Blue Stream Bar ain’t slacking either, as one of favorite bands Perpetual Motion Machine give an intimate performance along with folktronica duo Red. For smiles and cheers aalong with your beer then check out Temple where b of Buyi gets jolly with the likes of ACID Live – heck its worth it just to see their keyboardist let it rip. Head to the Old What? Bar where indie group Arrows Made of Desire will showcase some new material along with chillax electronic artist thruoutin – perhaps even warm enough to grab a seat outside. Continuing on the trend of dreamy electronica music XP trio of artists, NaraRubey, and immune, hit that sweet hypnotic dreamscape electronic chewy center – perfect for a lazy Friday. Alright metalheads these ones are for you – first off Tango is yet again hosting the 330 Metal Festival which will bring together SuffocatedCrackDeathpackSkyfire, and many more to head bang long into the night – save your energy for that one. At Yugong Yishan, mega Italian metal group Graveworm will be swinging for the moon with their extreme gothic metal. Kick the dust of those shoes and catch folk rockers Liu Lao & Sand at Mako LivehouseSchool is heading back to well school, with these fresh on the scene bands looking to make a splash including Children KingStay GoldLucy & Lily, and A Month Ago. Lastly, Taiwanese indie pop musician Europa looks to warm the hearts of this generation of Chinese at Mao Livehouse.

SATURDAY

The big show tonight is of course XTX, former Cold Blooded Animals, now esteemed rock godfather, who will be taking over Workers Gymnasium for then night – a bit pricey, but come on, how many times do you rock out in a stadium full of fans. Nearby at Yugong Yishan, John Lyton’s post-Sex Pistols, post-punk group PiL will open their arms to Chinese audiences for the first time, as they will be joined by our own ever-awesome post punk trio Re-Tros. However, one doesn’t need to splurge to get a big sounds –take for instance WHAI who will be hitting Temple for the hundredth time will their brand of hard hitting trance-inducing Die Hard-invoking (yeah I went there) cool as a cucumber music. Or take the afternoon off at Mako Livehouse where the Bhutan beauty Yunggiema will grace audiences with her lovely otherworldly voice along with Zhang Tie. Even better that evening the standout roster of who’s who in the folk scene will be on hand including Ma TiaoWang Fun RuiChuan Zi, and Toy Captain among others for a folk extravaganza. If you’re looking to sweat it out a bit then I’d recommend hitting up the Old What? Bar to catch Penicillin, Pork, Mud & Lotus, and Dirty Little Secret rock the house or head to XP who will host hardcore, metal, and skateboard punk rockers Saving MollyNower, and Larry’s Pizza. Hong Kong indie rock group Killer Soap are back in town again – they’ll be hitting up Mao Livehouse along with Escape Plan, and Twinkle Star – lots of swooning girls at this one folks. Lie in the dew over at Dos Kolegas and listen to the lovely ballads of Li Yan and Contraplans, or the ska of Skarving. Lastly, one can check out check Chiren at Jianghu Bar, Zhagn Xiao at Blue Stream Bar, and Dimo at the Hot Cat Club.

SUNDAY

Zajia Lab is throwing a twofer today – first up, a free afternoon hutong improv show featuring the likes of Li Jiannhong and Vavabond holy matrimony that is Mind Fiber and their brand of ‘environmental improvisation’ (read Josh’s piece on them here). Later in the evening, shoegaze darlings Skip Skip Ben Ben return, as they are joined by electronic artists layerMe:Mo, and knowledge as they bring the weekend to a close. If you’re in denial about the end, then be my guest and kick in some shackles at School where German hardcore group Nothing rocks out, or to Mao Livehouse where a slew of genres and bands perform, including Nine Treasures4ULady FirstNo Direction, and more. Lastly, one can hear upbeat uptempo indie rockers Toy Captian at Jianghu Bar.
