Been slacking on the new releases write-ups as of late due to a complete lack of a website but it’d be criminal not to get out the good word and some of the new music that’s been cramming my playlist for the past two months – here are some of the April releases that I highly recommend checking out —- including some top notch electronica from thruoutin, Swimful, and LOFIMAKER
thruoutin – Contingent of Outlying Territory外地领土
Beijing based electronic producer thruoutin outdoes himself on his latest EP, Contingent of Outlying Territory, out now on Ran Music. In many ways the eight-track release acts as a reintroduction to the artist even as it showcases a tonal shift from the artist’s prior repertoire – utilizing everything from Chicago footwork to field recordings to create a dizzying concoction that’s both club floor ripper and bedroom mixer. Charting into unknown territory has never sounded so satisfying.
Swimful – Pearls
Looking for a little bubbly electronica to kick off your weekend – let the UK-bred Shanghai-based producer Swimful lead the way. The artist recently dropped his latest EP Pearls off of SVBKVLT and if the opening track doesn’t plaster a smile on your face then I don’t know what will. Nostalgic ‘sino melodies’ that burst with color placed alongside ‘melancholic atmospheres’ that drips with condensation, it’s does exactly what EP should do – leave you wanting more.
Lofimaker – Chang Sheng Lian 长生炼
Beijing based label Do Hits continue their melding of electronic music and Chinese cultural relics of past and future on Lofimaker’s EP Chang Sheng Lian. Borrowing ‘ideas from China’s culture of burial, tomb-raiding and witchcraft (and) fusing together pioneering groove and traditional spirit’ it’s a delirious, fever pitch sampling of sounds that are both familiar and exotic, recategorized in ways that pay respect to their origins and their destination.
