Dream Can 谷水车间 – Into Sparks救火人生
Strange and beautiful, Dream Can has created a glazed over dollhouse of a debut album, one that gleefully goes down the rabbit hole. Equally intimidating and titillating, its hooks you in and keeps your ears constantly on the lookout as it wanders through a psychedelic wonderland chock full of noise rock anarchy, spacey strawberry-tainted melodies, and bewitching siren-like vocals. Like something straight out of a 70s Russ Meyer film – it’s groovy, heavy, with an ominous edge that constantly reminds you – ‘everything is not all right’.
iimmune – R0008313
The Beijing based label Prajnasonic continues to invigorate themselves with their latest series ‘atmos’ – which gives its members and other musicians a chance to shake loose and burrow into other genres. Label cofounder iimmune lays it all out on R0008313. Essentially a twenty-five minute piece that finds the producer incorporating his instrumental background and keen sense of structure, creating a lively, fluid piece of electronica that’s soothing, dizzyingly imaginative, with a bit of cool jazz thrown in for good measure. As always, it’s brimming with detail and musical ideas.
The Renaissance of Jingdezhen景德镇文艺复兴 – Cloud Disaster of Jingdezhen云难·景德镇
World fusion post rockers from Jingdezhen, Jiangxi (named after Emperor Song Zongzong and known for its porcelain) bring their exquisite, enrapturing culturally rife, fable-based music on their latest EP that combines four pieces the band has been working on since last year. Theatrical, lingering, with a strong dose of neofolk that wisely looks back at China’s own dense mythology for material, it’s a grand, bewildering, and unique piece of work.
